AI Zombie Video: How to Make a Zombie Transformation Clip

Make an AI zombie video from one selfie: photo tips, a 3-beat transformation format, captions, sounds and posting times for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

Published October 12, 2026

You've seen the clip: someone smiles at the camera, the lighting drops, and two seconds later their skin is grey and their eyes have gone milky. It takes one photo and about a minute to make your own.

Most AI zombie videos people post flop for boring reasons. The source photo is blurry, the transformation starts in the first frame so there's no surprise, or the caption gives the whole thing away. Fix those three and the same effect suddenly gets rewatched.

Step by step

  1. Pick a photo the AI can actually work with. The zombie effect rebuilds your face, so it needs a face to read. Use a front-facing photo where your head fills at least a third of the frame, both eyes are visible and the light comes from in front of you, not behind. A window-lit selfie at arm's length is ideal. Skip sunglasses, heavy filters and photos where a hand covers your chin. Group shots work less well because the app has to guess which face matters. If you want the before half of the video to feel real, use a photo that looks like something you'd normally post, not a studio headshot. Normal is what makes the turn creepy.
  2. Generate the zombie clip in Vody Spooky. Open Vody Spooky, choose the Zombie effect and upload your photo. You get back a short vertical video of you turning: skin decaying, eyes hollowing out, a slow stagger at the end. Generate two or three versions from slightly different photos if you can. In my experience one of every three comes out noticeably better, usually the one with the cleanest lighting. Save the original photo too, because you'll want it for the before shot in the edit.
  3. Build the edit around three beats. Zombie clips that perform tend to follow the same shape. Beat one (0 to 2 seconds): the normal you, either the still photo with a slight zoom or a quick real clip of you talking. Beat two (2 to 4 seconds): something goes wrong. A flicker, a glitch transition, the audio cuts out. Beat three (4 to 8 seconds): the full zombie reveal from the Vody clip. Keep the whole thing under 10 seconds. Short loops get replayed, and a replay counts as watch time, which is the number TikTok and Reels care about most. If the clip loops cleanly back to the normal photo, people often watch it two or three times before they realise it restarted.
  4. Choose a sound that does half the work. Sound is where a lot of zombie videos get lazy. A generic horror sting is fine, but trending audio gets you pushed to more people. Search the TikTok sound library for the Halloween or horror sounds that have a few thousand videos on them, not a few million: big enough to be recognised, small enough that you aren't buried. Line up the reveal with the beat drop or the scream. A silent half second right before the reveal makes the hit land harder. If you post the same video on Reels and Shorts, pick the sound inside each app rather than exporting with TikTok audio baked in, since Instagram and YouTube tend to quietly show watermarked or re-uploaded audio to fewer people.
  5. Write a caption that hides the twist. Don't write "my zombie transformation" as the caption. You just told people what happens, so why would they stay? Write something that frames the before, like "first day back at work after the outbreak" or "POV: you were bitten 3 hours ago and you're pretending you're fine". The on-screen text works the same way. Keep it short enough to read in a second and a half. Add the hashtags you'd normally use (#zombie, #halloween, #transformation) plus #AI. Labelling AI content is expected on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube now, and it saves you a comment section full of "is this real" arguments.
  6. Post it at the right time and reply fast. Zombie content searches climb from early October and peak in the last week before Halloween, so a video posted now has about three weeks of tailwind. Post in the evening in your main audience's time zone, roughly 6 to 10 pm, when people are scrolling in bed. Stay around for the first 30 minutes and reply to comments, especially "how did you do this". Those replies count as engagement and push the video further. If one version takes off, don't post a near copy the next day. Make a follow-up instead: the zombie version of your friend, your dog, or a duet reacting to your own transformation.

Mistakes to avoid

Pro tip: Turn it into a prank: send the before photo to a friend with "does my skin look weird to you?", wait for the reply, then send the zombie clip. Screen-record the chat and you've got a second video out of the same generation.

Make it with Vody Spooky

Vody Spooky handles the hard part: one photo in, a vertical zombie transformation video out, already sized for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. You can also try the same photo with the Vampire or Ghost effect if you want a series instead of a single post.

FAQ

Can I make an AI zombie video from a photo of a friend?

Yes, any clear front-facing photo works. Ask before you post it, though. Most people love seeing their zombie version, but nobody likes finding their face in a video they didn't agree to.

How long does it take to make one?

Generating the clip takes about a minute in Vody Spooky. Editing in the before shot, sound and text in CapCut or the TikTok editor takes another 5 to 10 minutes once you have the three-beat format down.

Does the zombie effect work on pets?

It's built for human faces, so results on pets are hit or miss. A dog photo taken straight on with good light sometimes gives a funny result, so it's worth one try.

Should I label it as AI?

Yes. Add #AI to the caption and use the platform AI label if it offers one. It keeps the video in good standing and it rarely hurts views for obviously fictional content like a zombie transformation.
